About & history

Ancient Maya artisans in regions spanning modern-day Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras created intricate ceramic figures and ritual objects using native local clays. These sculptures were crafted to honor rulers, deities, and ancestors, often serving significant ceremonial functions within Mesoamerican temples and elite burials. Craftsmen shaped these pieces by hand or in molds, adding fine details with incised lines and applying mineral pigments before firing them in open kilns.

Local priests and nobility used these ceremonial sculptures in religious rites, public rituals, and domestic shrines to communicate with the spiritual realm. The figures were positioned in sacred spaces to record historical events, depict mythological narratives, or ensure the favor of the gods over agricultural cycles. Over centuries, changing political landscapes and the collapse of major urban centers led to the abandonment of these sacred sites, leaving the fragile pottery buried beneath tropical soil until later archaeological discoveries.
