About & history

Skilled weavers in workshops across northern China made small decorative rugs and mats, particularly in centers like Beijing and Tientsin. These pieces were produced during the early to mid-twentieth century primarily for export to Western markets as decorative wall hangings or small accent carpets. They were crafted using hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, with the pile carefully clipped and chiseled by hand around the edges of the design to create a three-dimensional carved effect.

Well-to-do homeowners used these textiles in their living rooms and studies to add a touch of Eastern exoticism to their interior decoration. They were typically displayed hung on walls as small tapestries or placed on furniture surfaces rather than walked upon on the floor. Over time, changing interior design fashions led to a decline in their popularity, and many survived primarily as cherished family mementos or collector's curiosities.
