Vintage Spanish cast bronze decorative ashtray by El Arte Español.

El Arte Español produced cast metal decorative objects in Madrid, Spain, beginning in the early twentieth century. These items were created to satisfy a growing demand for traditional artistic metalware that replicated classical Renaissance and Baroque designs. Skilled artisans manufactured them by pouring molten bronze into detailed sand molds, followed by hand-chasing and applying chemical patinas to highlight the intricate relief work.

Affluent homeowners and travelers used these decorative trays in living rooms and studies as smoking accessories or small catchalls for calling cards and coins. They sat on wooden tables and desks to hold personal items during social gatherings in the middle decades of the twentieth century. Changing interior decoration styles and a decline in indoor smoking eventually reduced the popularity of such decorative bronze pieces.
