Chinese Antique Large & Thick Paper Hand Painted Gold And Flowers Fan with Wood Base.

Traditional Asian artisans created large decorative folding fans in workshops across China and Japan. These grand pieces were crafted primarily as interior ornaments to adorn residential and public walls during the mid to late twentieth century. Skilled painters applied metallic gold leaf or paint onto heavy paper leaves before rendering detailed botanical and avian subjects by hand.

Homeowners and interior decorators utilized these large fans to fill expansive wall spaces above furniture and mantelpieces. They served as vibrant focal points in living rooms and entryways, bringing traditional aesthetic motifs into modern domestic interiors. Over time, changing interior design trends shifted away from oversized wall fans, eventually relegating them to the secondary vintage and secondhand market.
