Skilled glass artisans on the island of Murano near Venice created decorative blown glass sculptures like this one using traditional Italian techniques. These whimsical figurines were crafted during the mid-to-late twentieth century to bring bright color and artistic flair into modern homes. Masters shaped the molten glass by hand, pulling and twisting the material while hot to create the flowing lines and delicate feather or wing details.
Families placed these charming ornaments on living room mantelpieces, bookshelves, and glass-front display cabinets to catch the light. They served purely as decorative conversation pieces during dinner parties and family gatherings. Over time, changing home decor trends caused production of many such novelty animals and figures to decline.
